The half hour nobody quotes for

Most removalist quotes talk about how many bedrooms you’ve got and how far you’re going. Almost none of them mention the time of day. In Cranbourne, that’s a mistake — because getting the timing wrong out here adds 30 to 45 minutes to a job, and on an hourly rate, you’re the one paying for it.

We’re in Cranbourne several times a week, so we’ve watched this play out for years. Here’s what actually happens.

Where it bites

Thompsons Road. The main east–west route across the top of Cranbourne, and it fills up from mid-afternoon. If your move involves a truck crossing it late in the day, you’ll feel it.

The South Gippsland Highway. Fine at 10am. A different road entirely by half past four, particularly heading back towards the freeway.

The Western Port Highway. The route most crews take getting in and out of the area, and the one where a bad run turns into a genuinely long delay rather than a nuisance.

The estate streets themselves. This one surprises people. Around 3pm the courts and through-roads in the newer estates fill with school pick-up — cars parked on both sides, narrow roads made narrower, and a twelve-tonne truck trying to reverse into a driveway in the middle of it. Even when the main roads are moving, the last two hundred metres can cost you fifteen minutes.

What that means on your invoice

Thirty to forty-five minutes doesn’t sound like much until you understand where it lands. It’s not one delay — it’s often the return leg after the first load, or the run back for a second trip, or the crew arriving at the new place later than planned and finishing in the dark.

On an hourly job, that’s straightforwardly your money. On a fixed-price job, the company has already built it into the number, which means you paid for it whether it happened or not.

What we do about it

We start early where we can. If the client can work with a 7am start, we’d rather load out while the roads are empty and have the truck moving before Thompsons Road wakes up. It’s the single easiest way to keep a Cranbourne job on schedule.

That’s a request, not a rule. Plenty of people can’t do an early start — kids to get to school, a settlement that won’t confirm before midday, a landlord doing a final inspection at ten. That’s completely fine, and when that’s the case we plan the day around it instead: we’ll aim to be loaded and clear of the main roads before the afternoon builds, rather than fighting it in both directions.

The point is that we’re thinking about it at all. When you ring us and tell us the address, the timing conversation happens then — not on the day when a crew’s sitting in traffic on the clock.

Being local is the actual advantage

This is why it matters that Cranbourne is on our regular run rather than an occasional trip. A company driving out from the other side of Melbourne has already spent an hour getting to you before the first box moves, and they’re doing the same trip in reverse at the worst possible time of day. They’re not being lazy — they just don’t have the option.
