We’re up the road, not down the freeway

Here’s the thing most people don’t think about until the truck’s late: nearly every removalist advertising in Rye is coming from Melbourne. That’s an hour and a half before anyone picks up a box, and the same again on the way home.

We’re in Mornington. Rye is a normal day’s work for us, not an expedition.

That shows up in small ways that matter — crews arriving fresh instead of frazzled, a truck that can come back the same afternoon if something’s been left behind, and quotes that aren’t padded to cover a round trip up the Peninsula.

Summer changes everything down here

If you’re moving between December and February, the traffic is the single biggest thing working against you.

Point Nepean Road through Rosebud and Rye stops being a road and starts being a car park. There’s no clever back way around it — it’s the way in and the way out, and everyone’s using it. A run that takes twenty minutes in June can take you the better part of an hour in January, and that’s before you’ve found somewhere to park a twelve-tonne truck on a street lined with holiday cars.

What we do about it is simple: we start early. Loading out at seven in the morning while the road is still empty is worth more to your invoice than any discount we could offer you. If an early start doesn’t suit, we’ll work around it — but we’ll be honest with you at the quote about what a midday move in January actually looks like.

Outside the summer months, none of this applies and Rye is one of the easier places on the Peninsula to work.

The suburb isn’t one suburb

Rye splits into a few different jobs depending on where you are.

Around the foreshore and Ocean Beach Road it’s mostly units and holiday flats — smaller loads, but tight parking and a decent carry from wherever the truck ends up. Up toward the back beach you get the big blocks, and with them sandy driveways, a bit of slope, and the occasional place where a large truck genuinely can’t get in or back out. That’s fine when we know in advance; it’s a problem when we find out with a full load. Through Tootgarook and the flatter streets it’s more straightforward — more permanent residents, more furniture overall, and driveways you can actually reverse into.

What we do in Rye

Full house moves, start to finish, including the packing if you’d rather not do it. Local runs between Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Rosebud, usually done inside a day. A lot of holiday home work — furnishing a place, swapping it over between seasons, or clearing it out after a sale — and we’re happy to do part-loads, because you shouldn’t pay for a truck you’re only half filling. Storage when the sale in town and the purchase down here refuse to line up. Long distance and interstate, with our own crew at both ends. And the awkward things: pianos, pool tables, outdoor settings, kayaks, and whatever else has quietly accumulated in the shed since 2009.

What moves the price up or down

Access is the big one in Rye. Sandy or steep driveways, long carries from the street, back beach blocks where the truck parks well away from the door. All of it takes time.

How much there actually is. A holiday unit part-load and a four-bedroom family home are different days.

When you’re moving. Summer, weekends and end of month all book out first and all take longer. Midweek in autumn is the cheapest move you’ll ever have.

Where it’s going. Rye to Blairgowrie is a different job to Rye to Melbourne.

Do you charge extra to come to Rye? No. We’re based in Mornington, so it’s local work for us.

Is summer really that much harder? Yes, mostly because of the traffic on Point Nepean Road. Book early, start early, and it’s a non-issue.

Can you do a part-load for a holiday house? Yes, and we do plenty of them.

What if settlement dates don’t line up? Very common down here. We’ll store your things in between rather than you moving twice.
